Congratulations to Past International President Darlene Gillies of Neepawa, Manitoba Council 924, who was named the 2018 Volunteer of the Year! Through her local council Darlene has been involved with community service for decades, coordinating Join Hands Day projects with local youth, assisting with UCT Safety Poster Contests, organizing safety days to benefit area students, and volunteering for Special Olympics.
Through her individual volunteer efforts, Darlene has proved herself to be an asset to her community through the 1,000 plus hours-worth of personal volunteering she gives each year that includes working in palliative care and sitting with terminally ill patients in their final hours, visiting and consoling bereaved families in their homes, driving cancer patients to appointments and chemo and radiation treatments, and assisting at the local flu clinic.
Congrats also to Past Regional President Dave Poets of James B. Chrisp Council 448, Brandon, Manitoba, who was honored with UCT’s Lifetime Achievement Award during the convention. Dave was recognized for the exceptional volunteer contributions he has made over the decades to his community through his support of charities like the Cancer Society, the Multiple Sclerosis Society, Big Brothers-Big Sisters, Meals on Wheels, and the local hospice and humane society, youth sports and highway cleanups.
Dave was also recognized for his 15 years as UCT’s Fraternal Director for Canada and VP of Canadian Operations and for spending a lot of years traveling Canada – most particularly the Manitoba-Saskatchewan region – recruiting members and helping to establish local councils.
We love you, Darlene and Dave! You’re both true community advocates and devoted members. Many thanks for all you’ve done and continue to do for UCT!
